Welcome to Rhodes, the largest island in the Dodecanese. It is one of the most
touristy islands in Greece thanks to an attractive mix of good beaches, plenty of sightseeing, an unspoilt interior, and a sound reputation for being the sunniest island in the Aegean (it sees over 300 days of sunshine a year). This is
probably just as well, for myth has it that when Zeus divided up the world he forgot to allocate a portion to the sun god, Helios, who promptly took for his own the fertile island of Rhodes that was just then emerging from the sea.
Rhodes is an island which has plenty to offer, it is not one of the
stereotypical Greek islands with white, sugar-lump houses; instead, its charm
lies in the numerous influences of its long eventful history. The magnificent,
well-preserved medieval Rhodes town was built by the Knights of the Order of St
John, and there are many interesting sites to visit here. In order to really
discover the island, you need to get off the beaten track and away from the
places frequented by the vast majority of tourists. The more typical villages
and network of paths to the south and west of the island have so far been
spared. There are numerous beaches on the island, in general, they are well kept
and less crowded than those on the other Greek islands.
